Avon Tyres British GT Championship at Brands Hatch
All of these clips were taken at the Avon tyres British GT Championship and British Formula 3 Championship at Brands Hatch on the 13th of July 2008. They were the headline events but there was also the Texaco Havoline Ginetta Championship, Caterham Superlights and the Volkswagon Cup. It was a nice summers day with a few clouds and not too hot and a friend picked me up early lunchtime as I'm only 30 minutes away from Brands. Normally when we go to Brands we turn up just as the last race finishes before lunch and head straight for the bar but I guess we missed lunch because it was all go on track from the moment we got there. Consequently we turned right immediately after the gate to head anticlockwise around the circuit. We both had our camcorders and plenty of tape although battery life seems to be the limiting factor.
We saw the end of the Superlights as we arrived. I didn't really appreciate the performance of the little Caterhams fully until I watched this footage a few times and compared them to the VWs and Ginettas. At turn in they seem every bit as quick as the GTs.
The Volkswagon Cup race was the first one we saw from warm up lap and we got some nice footage and managed to catch a minor 'racing incident' on camera which made my day to be honest, if not the drivers. Some interesting entries in the VW Cup and I enjoyed watching and listening to them. Me and me mate split up and the Ginetta and GT races were next. I enjoyed the viewing from Stirlings Bend a lot and will definitely head there in future. Got footage of the Ginettas there. In fact you are surprisingly close to Druids too
It felt like a big event and there were extra bars and stands in comparison to most events I go to at Brands. There were a couple of Lamborghini Diablos parked up, one with an interesting kind of furry/velvety dashboard. Also a TVR T350 which is very petit next to the Lambos. There was a huge carsales fair or something going on in the parking area over the back of the start/finish straight and kart track. We had better things to do than kick tyres. There were fair ground type rides there too and it was busy all around the circuit apart from the extremities. Still plenty of space to view the racing.
A great day all in all but the burgers at Brands, as ever, need improvement. Highly recommend this one next year.
